If you live in a home that doesn’t have many lights in the space or in an environment where you don’t get a lot of natural light coming into your home, it can sometimes feel like you’re living in a cave. But luckily, there are things that you can do to brighten up the space and help you feel more lively with the amount of light that you’re able to live in.
To help you with this, here are three tips for getting more light into a dark house.
Use Light Colors Throughout The Space
What you do within your home can have a big impact on how light the space is able to feel. For example, if you have a lot of dark furniture and decor pieces, those items will absorb any light that is coming into the room and not reflect it back into the space, making the whole area feel a lot darker than it might actually be.
On the other hand, when you use lighter colors throughout your space—like getting lighter colors for the furniture, window treatments, paint, and more—these items will reflect light back into the room and make the room look and feel lighter. So if you notice that you have a lot of dark items in your dark room, you might want to consider switching them out for something lighter.
Let In More Daylight
Something else that can help to make a room feel lighter is to just get more natural light coming into the space.
There are a few different ways that you can do this. If you already have a lot of windows in the room but you don’t open them or you have heavy drapes over them, switching to lighter drapes or removing the drapes altogether can make a lot of headway. Additionally, you can also have more windows put into the room so that even more light is able to come into the space.
Decorate With Mirrors and Other Reflective Surfaces
The decor items that you have within the room can add or take away the light that comes into the space.
When you decorate with reflective items, like mirrors that you place on the walls or even with furniture or accessories made of glass or other reflective materials, the light playing off of these items will help to bounce more light around the room and make the space brighter. So if you don’t already have mirrors in your dark rooms, consider where you could place mirrors or other reflective surfaces to help bounce lights all around the space.
If your house is dark and you’d like to feel like there’s more light and life in the space, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you make this happen.
